Pre Pointe Assessment
After years of dedicated training, a young dancer may reach the stage where progressing to pointe work becomes a possibility. As every dancer develops differently, both anatomically and in terms of physical maturity, it is essential to carefully consider readiness before beginning pointe work. This helps reduce the risk of injury to developing structures, particularly in the feet and ankles.
A Pre-Pointe Assessment conducted by a qualified physiotherapist gathers essential information to support the dance teacher in determining whether the dancer is physically prepared for this next stage. If the dancer is not yet ready, the assessment will identify specific areas that require further development and appropriate exercises can be recommended to help achieve readiness.
The assessment lasts approximately 55 minutes and includes evaluation of:
- Health Profile: includes medical history, previous injuries and relevant lifestyle factors
- Dance history
- Stage of physical development
- Posture
- Proprioception
- Trunk and scapular control
- Lower-limb flexibility and stability
- Functional movement
- Following the assessment, recommendations will be discussed with the dancer and their parent/guardian and teacher if attending. You will receive a tailored exercise programme with videos sent by email and available via our exercise app, or a printed copy with pictures if you prefer.
